Dative: A Story of Restoration and Redemption

Meet Dative!

Not only is she one of our talented yarn spinners, but Dative’s journey to our ministry is quite the story!

Read on to learn more about Dative and the remarkable way the Lord brought her to Handspun Hope.

A single mother to four children, Dative also cares for a young college student who was orphaned.

She now earns a monthly wage spinning yarn and says God has changed her life and taken away her loneliness through her job at Handspun Hope. All of her children are attending school and she is making improvements to her home.

Dative’s incredible journey to Handspun Hope…

Decades ago, Dative worked for another organization where she was employed to spin yarn. Unfortunately, the organization’s infrastructure was destroyed during the Genocide against the Tutsi, which occurred in 1994. As a result of the conflict, Dative lost her job.

In 2017, while researching the history of spinning wool into yarn in Rwanda, Handspun Hope country director, Simon Dufitumukiza, learned of Dative who had worked as one of the spinners prior to 1994. Through word of mouth and an intense search, God led Simon to Dative’s home where she shared her story and a photo of herself spinning yarn from 1989. We believe that the survival of the photograph is a tiny miracle which reminds us of how God restored her life by giving her dignified employment through spinning yarn, once again, at Handspun Hope.

When Simon met Dative, she was working odd construction jobs, a difficult occupation in Rwanda. Dative carried buckets of mud and concrete on her head. It was difficult and not a job that gave her steady income. Simon offered her a job right on the spot. Dative has been working as one of our spinners since.

Thank you, Dative, for sharing your heart, story and talent with Handspun Hope!

We are so grateful God brought you to be part of the Handspun Hope Family.

Each of the ladies working for Handspun Hope has her own story. We encourage you to spend some time reading their profiles and discover just how much these women have lost, survived and overcome. We are thankful for each of them and how God is restoring and redeeming their lives.

When you partner with Handspun Hope with a monthly pledge of $150, it helps us supply everything that is needed to fully and holistically support one woman for one month. When these fees are covered by contributions, it frees up funds to be used by the organization for other critical needs. Although $150 per month fully covers what is needed for one women for one month, we are grateful for any monthly pledge amount. You can read more about the other women and learn more about becoming a monthly Partner in Hope by clicking the link below.
